[Kingdom Hearts - Kingdom Chronicles] Nature and Machinery
Title: Nature and Machinery
Fandom: Kingdom Hearts - Kingdom Chronicles
Summary: Aspen may be one crazy child, but Carlin decided a long time ago that he wouldn't care anymore.
Disclaimer: While I may own both Aspen Strife and Carlin Tuetsi, Kingdom Hearts belongs to Square-Enix and Disney. I'm just borrowing these characters for a fic.
Every day came with a brand new flier. Monday was "Save the Whales!" while Tuesday rang in with "Protect our Rainforests!"; Wednesday brought on "Don't Forget our Slums" as Thursday reminded everyone to "Help Our Animals" and Friday? Well, no one even wanted to think about a message that prompted him to "Save Mint Chocolate Chip Ice Cream from Extinction."
Scrooge McDuck put it best, "That Strife boy's going to go crazy from all the campaigning one day."
A long time ago, Carlin would have agreed with him. Aspen wasn't a bad person for wanting to save so much of the world... but it was a lofty goal for a eleven year old boy. Even if people claimed one person made a difference, how could a mere child try to help fifty different organizations? For someone so young, Aspen at least had his heart in the right place.
No one else really knew what to make of the blond constantly screaming into a megaphone. Mostly, they swerved around him at the marketplace, pretended they couldn't see him in the bars (a good idea in itself), and avoided him at all costs elsewhere.
Aspen must've been some kind of embarrassment to Cloud and Aerith. After Charice (a sweet girl with her head in the clouds) and Eris (a daddy's boy), they raised a son that made all flower children proud. He was even named after a tree!
But Carlin had to admit: he was proud of his friend. People can stare at the two of them all they wanted to! They could wander the streets of Radiant Garden together all they wanted. No one should care, even if Carlin is seven years older and Aspen's interests lie more in the woods than machinery. They perfectly balanced each other.
Although she was merely giggling about it one day, Lucia had described them perfectly as yin and yang. Nature and Machinery. Green and Red. Sweet delights and salty treats. Opposites in nearly every imaginable way, from their favorite foods to the colors they proudly wore nearly every single day.
Carlin didn't care what people said about him or Aspen. Yes, every day came with a new flier and a new cry to save some poor creature or species from the brink of extinction. However, every new day would also come with a new promise to save those poor species and creatures... and quite frankly? That was all that mattered.
