[ToW: RM] Learning to Trust

Title: Learning to Trust
Fandom: Tales of the World: Radiant Mythology
Prompt: "I never meant to let myself trust you. It just...happened."
Summary: Senel talks to the Descender about trust.
Disclaimer: This all belongs to Namco. ♥ I just poked around with them for a story.
Spoilers?: Just hints about Kannono. While it's nothing worthy of end-game spoilers, it is more of a "if you haven't done a couple of story missions in Gavada, don't bother" fic.

He had settled into life in Gavada for a while now. It wasn't like Ailily, where the people's voices blended into the earth because of their former oppression, or Doplund, the tall city where everything seemed to float away with the sky.

Gavada had this shallow beauty about it. Gorgeous flowers bloomed nearly everywhere; the fountain in the middle of the plaza always stayed white. Sure, it was beautiful. But what good was beauty when it was made artificially? This town always scared Mormo. While the citizens were cheerful and blessing Aurora for her wonderful talents, he would be cursing her behind their backs.

He - Mormo's partner - couldn't help laughing about it. Mormo would sulk at him for what nearly seemed to be hours upon hours, and then they made up at the end. Their life always worked out like that. He found it surprising that people were attracted to their odd friendship.

In Ailily, Genis would laugh whenever he caught snippets of their banter. Mormo's partner still found it hard to believe that beings such as half-elves existed - and that in their respective worlds, elves were the only beings able to cast magic. He was sure that he wasn't an elf by any stretch of the word. So, how could he cast magic here in Terresia?

Mormo had commented on his partner's laments once, saying, "This is Terresia and your its defender. You've probably got different rules than they do, you know?"

Yeah, that seemed to make sense. Even when the two were separated today (Mormo went off to the plaza in search of pretzels. Why he couldn't take the Descender along too, no one would ever know), it seemed they always knew about the other's whereabouts.

Wait. He could see Senel on the other side of the plaza now. It wasn't often that the Descender saw him. Sure, they fought together whenever there were requests to fill out, and maybe they'd be eating together at the inn every now and then. Senel, however, was one of those lone wolves. You couldn't get much out of him (well, unless you were Reid in search of bread) - and when you did, it often didn't help much.

How were they supposed to look for a girl named Shirley if they had no idea what she looked like? Well, he supposed he could always stop down every white-haired girl he saw. (Senel said something once about her having pale skin. Maybe his was tanned from being in the sun too much?)

"Hey, you got a moment?"

Whoa, Senel wanted to talk to him? This was rare. Blinking, it was all the Descender could do to manage a, "Yeah, sure thing. What's up?"

"... I wanted to thank you for helping me look for my sister."

"I wanted to look for her," The Descender replied with a smile. "So it's really nothing. Was that it?"

Senel looked away, rubbing his arm. "... And to apologize for not trusting you earlier."

Hold up a minute. Senel, apologizing? Surely this had to be a dream. One very, very weird dream where he would wake up in two minutes and Senel would be his usual grumpy self.

"It's that weird that I'm apologizing?"

The Descender couldn't help laughing. "Yeah," He shyly admitted. "You normally act first, talk later. It's different."

"You know, I never meant to trust you," Senel replied, looking up at the sky. "It... just kinda happened."

Where had the Descender heard that before? In Ailily, Kratos had said something along those lines once. Kratos always gave off that aura of being untrustworthy. It was really a miracle they ended up getting along as well as they did. (Lloyd's feelings about the two helped a lot!)

The Descender supposed it was hard to trust him. Here he was, a stranger out of the blue who joined Ad Libitum in less time than it took most members. Not only did he have a strange partner, but he could also perform pretty much every class with what seemed to be little to no effort. Oh, and it didn't help that Kannono and he had a pretty close relationship.

He hadn't guessed that his seemingly near-perfection would scare other people off. Maybe some people had their doubts, believing that he worked for the Devourer. Funny how that worked. Funny that they thought he worked for the bad guys, while Kannono got off scot-free.

"It's because I'm different, right?"

"Maybe," Senel said, his gaze still focused on the twinkling stars. "You're not a spoiled brat, you're not hopelessly optimistic, or obsessed with food. Still, there's something odd about you."

"I guess," The Descender slowly replied. "... Perhaps we can try to work those differences out more?"

To his surprise, Senel slowly smiled. "Sounds nice. Maybe we can do this after the Devourer's gone."

"Yeah. And then we can look for Shirley."

"Sounds great."

"He~ey guys, guess what? The pretzel was having a buy two, get one free sale!"

Both boys turned to face a grinning Mormo, his paws stuffed with sweet-smelling pretzels. His partner couldn't help laughing as he ran over to get a fresh almond pretzel out of his grasp. Senel watched on with an odd smile.

"You two remind me of them," He whispered to the twinkling stars. "Maybe... if I trust him a little bit longer, I'll find her. I'm sure of it."
