[FFXIII+DC Comics] Dealing With It

Title: Dealing With It
Fandoms: DC Comics + Final Fantasy XIII (crossover)
Relationship: Tom Bronson/Lightning Farron
Summary: After a frustrating day, Tom just wants to go home and sleep. A chance meeting with Lightning shows him that he probably, definitely has a different way to deal with it all.
Notes: This fic takes place in the universe of [livejournal.com profile] witchesreign; ie, it's a military school where both Lightning and Tom teach.
Disclaimer: None of this is mine! I'm not sure where this fic came from, but it was totally fun to write---and Nika darling, I'm sorry if I goofed up on Lightning.

After what'd been a particularly stressful day, Tom wanted nothing more than to head to his dorm and call it a night. Between the stupid students who didn't know uppercuts from punches to his particularly dense colleagues, even a pacifist like Tom could be coerced into violence. How else was he supposed to deal with the world? With alcohol? Fat chance, he didn't want to drown himself on a Tuesday night.

Pathetic people drunk themselves into a stupor on a weekday, and Tom hadn't quite stooped to that level yet.

So he stuffed his hands in his pockets and started to walk around campus. At this hour, most places were empty - students were undoubtedly busy studying for finals - but he could still see a light inside the Training Center. He wasn't sure why he followed it; after all, he hated fighting.

Unless he had friends to meet, he never stepped foot. And yet, he found himself walking inside and passing by student parties defeating Grats and various monsters roaming around the Center. Most of them were pretty good - it came with the territory of being a military school - but the sound of gunfire chilled him.

Swerving to see a sword slice a T-Rexaur into two, Tom let a low whistle escape his lips. Figures he'd see her here at this hour. Did she ever sleep?

She took a step back and deftly placed her gunblade back in its holster. Brushing back her light pink hair, she then cast her gaze on him and gave him an acknowledging nod. "Bronson."

He smiled widely at her as he bridged the gap between them. "Hey Light. Still being a total beast, I see."

It had to be the heat of battle getting to her---why else would her entire face be slightly flushed? She avoided his gaze before folding her arms. "Were you planning on getting some practice in?" She asked, snorting slightly.

Good question. Tom shook his head after a moment of deliberation. "Couldn't really sleep. It's... one of those nights, you know?"

She tilted her head at him quizicially, as if to ask him to continue. By now, Tom knew his friend's nuances pretty well - right down to how her cool, calm, and composed manner had been slightly off this whole time. Perhaps that T-Rexaur had been more taxing on her than she thought.

"Well, like..." He licked his upper lip, staring up at the ceiling and trying to find his words from thin air. "I feel like most of my students aren't getting what I want them to get and freaking Dick Grayson's being an idiot, I don't know how he's allowed to teach when he's literally the epitome of stupidity..."

He sighed, glancing at her with a half-exasperated smile. "Aren't you going to say something?"

She shook her head, giving him the faintest hint of a wry smile as she started to leave. Casually brushing against his shoulder, she commented, "Come on. You can tell me the rest during the next round."

Tom couldn't disobey, not when she sounded so commanding like that. He sheepishly nodded, following her past the students and the Grats roaming free. Just before they found a clearing, Tom instinctively grabbed Lightning's hand. "Hey," He said, stopping in his tracks. "Can I show you some place?"

Again, her face matched her hair. Lightning glanced over her shoulder at him before hesitantly caving in, "... Sure. Not like I've got anything better to do."

"Great!" Tom chuckled, motioning for her to follow him past the bushes, past the trees, past the river that somehow magically flowed through the area. Increasing his pace to a brisk run, he held her hand the whole way. The warmth of her hand - and its softness, he didn't expect a soldier's hand to feel this smooth - felt too good to let go. Unless she said something, he wouldn't release it. Not purposefully, anyway.

Stopping at the edge of a cliff, he turned back and smiled at her.

"So? What do you think?"

Lightning narrowed her eyes at him ever-so-slightly, "... You brought me here? Bronson?"

Crap, she was angry. What was he supposed to do...? Something to distract her, definitely. Pulling himself closer to her, he leaned forward and gently pressed his lips against hers. Quickly - and he meant quickly - letting go, he cautiously watched her expression.

If she was going to slap him, he knew he had to run fast.

But she didn't hit him. Or laugh at him. Or any of the usual Light reactions he expected from her. Instead, before he realized it, she'd stood on her very tip-toes and kissed him.

"You idiot," She snorted in his ear, just after she let go.

For some reason, he couldn't associate it with her usual amount of dissatisfaction. Tom chuckled, glancing back up at the stars again. Why had he been so upset with the world earlier? Because people were stupid like he? What a silly reason to be so frustrated with the world. After all, hadn't it just given him the one thing he wanted more than anything else?

"If that's being stupid," He retorted back as they ran back towards the battlefield, "Then I don't want to be smart."

Every negative emotion - from the frustation to the anger to everything - magically erased themselves with the soft punch Light threw at his shoulder. Tom glanced down at it, rubbed it with his free hand, and then let a laugh escape his lips.

"What?"

Light innocently smiled back at him as she pulled out her gunblade. "Nothing."

In that moment, Tom knew he'd found his brand new - and absolutely, positively perfect - way to deal with the world.
