[DCAU - Batman Beyond] One of Those Nights

Something quick I wrote up for [livejournal.com profile] 1jobonthisship again. ♥ Basically, I wanted to write how Jason first met Damian - or well, how he first met Robin. There's not much else to say, so I hope y'all like it.

Title: One of Those Nights
Fandom: DC Animated Universe
Universe: expanded Batman Beyond
Summary: Jason Young never thought he'd wish for a night where he and Mom just worked on paperwork... but yet, he DID.
Disclaimer: I don't own any of this! Just playing around in it for fun, okay? o/

Evenings in Mom's office were never exactly Jason's definition of fun. Most of the time, papers stacked high on Mom's desk demanded her attention and Jason found himself playing with his iPhone or those old-fashioned playing cards - just something to take his mind off work - until she invariably needed his help, she declared the case a lost cause for the night, or she miraculously figured out the answer on her own. (Or she finished all the paperwork, but option number four'd always been the most boring one.)

"Why'd you call me here again?" Jason finally asked, staring up from what must've been his tenth game of Klondike. "I thought you wanted to get away from work tonight." The silent, 'I'm not a little kid anymore' was all but implied in his tone. (If she needed his help already, she should just ask instead of being stupidly stubborn.)

Mom sighed, finally pushing aside some papers. "I... there's a case I think you need to look at."

What? Jason stared at her as if she'd grown a second head. "Why didn't you say so sooner?" Immediately ignoring his game, he stood up and walked to her desk to peer down at the digitized files. The first page wasn't very interesting - though it'd be helpful later, it being a case study - so he moved his fingers to gain access to the second page.

Folding her hands, Mom leaned forward in her seat, "My officers think it's a standard juvenile abuse case, but you and I know there's gotta be more than that."

Even a monkey could've told her that. Jason scoffed, still reading over the files, "Did they just want to go home early again?"

"Most likely," Mom laughed in agreement.

He-- well, he didn't want to admit it, but these evenings weren't half-bad. Jason still would've preferred evenings at home with Mom, Dad, and Kyle (his latest stray--- after he'd adopted the first one, Cissie, saying no'd never been an option). Or evenings curled up on the couch with Rachel, his other cat Harvey, and two large boxes of Chinese take-out. Mom's office - even with all the pictures of him and Dad at church-league soccer games - was a snooze fest.

That's when he heard something tap at the window. Mom swerved to pull the curtains.

.... A little kid was standing ontop of a pile of thugs and goons. Robin. Jason's eyes narrowed. How dare Batman - whoever he was - have a munchkin work for him at this hour of the night?

Babs stared wordlessly at the pile before blankly remembering to open the window. The kid - dressed to the nines in protective armor and over-sized green and gray goggles - playfully saluted them both. "Batman says thanks," The kid cheekily said, then jumping off the pile and floating - floating in mid-air as he pushed the rather (large) pile into her office.

Jason's palm slowly ran down his face.

Well. He couldn't say evenings with Mom were dull now, could he? Willing himself to not yell at the kid, Jason calmly - but angrily - retorted, "Kid, if you even think of wearing that---"

Jason opened his eyes and stared. He'd spoken to empty air this whole time. Before either Mom or Jason knew it, the pint-sized twip'd disappeared into the night. Mom only sighed before pulling out her cell phone, "Men? We just received a rather large present in my office. If you could send a troop to collect them, we'd most appreciate it."

"Does this happen often?!" Jason exasperatedly demanded, wildly waving his arms in the air. "Mom! Come on! That was... that was...!"

"The answer to the other case I hadn't solved," Mom wryly smiled. "I have no idea what Bruce's up to, but it seems he works in mysterious ways after all."

ARGH. Mom didn't get it! Batman enlisted a kid in this day and age to do his dirty work. Mentally making a note to go visit "Grandpa Bruce" later, Jason slowly nodded and picked up his stack of cards. "... I guess," He cautiously replied. "It's just the principle of the matter here."

Mom stood up, closing her files - and her internet connection - as a troop of officers stormed in and forcibly removed Robin's "welcoming present" from the office. Jason numbly watched them leave before he slung an arm around Mom's shoulder. Together, they headed outside to Jason's car.

Just this once, Jason wished that tonight could've been one of those "nothing but paperwork" nights. It would've certainly made his life so much easier.
