Unbroken Bonds
Title: Unbroken Bonds
Summary: When Kaze dies in battle and reveals himself to be Saoru, Toffee matures a great deal. Told from Aspen and Soramimi Keiki's POV at the beginning, but becomes solely Soramimi's POV later on. This is AU and shouldn't be treated as part of Kokoro. Meant to be a "What if?" and nothing else, okies?
Disclaimer: Soramimi Keiki and Toffee don't belong to me. I'm going to make Toffee very OOC, so bear with me. x-x;
Our mother wasn't as cheerful as she used to be in her childhood. Sure, she acted like she was cheerful - and her mask was definitely one of childish happiness. But she wasn't cheerful at all.
After I, Soramimi Keiki, turned three years old, something happened to our father. A huge battle happened back in otousama's timeline while we were visiting it. Since my mother didn't know - still - that Kaze and Saoru (that's otousama) were the same person, she had no idea that Kaze was really her lover all this time.
But this time... tousan died in battle. I, Aspen Kazeki, was only five years old and too young to understand death. It was this instance that finally matured her into a lady that should act her age... and it was this instance that she finally learned to cry true tears of sorrow..
"Aspen-kun? Mimi-chan?"
We looked up from our respective hobbies. I was scrapbooking pictures of my parents (along with my aunties Namiko and Sandee and my uncle Kisshu), while niichan was playing a video game.
"Is something wrong, kaasan?" I noticed the tone of confusion that held in my big brother's face. Even though his eyes were still on his game as he was trying to beat the boss, his ears were open to her voice.
"...I suppose that you'd like to know the full story of how your father died, wouldn't you?"
That sentence brought niichan back to reality. As the boy quickly finished the battle, saved his game, and turned it off - he began to inch closer to our mother.
"Would we ever! Kaasan, you've always said that he died in a car accident..."
That was what we were taught to believe since we were little children. However, niichan seemed to think that that story wasn't correct. He went to ask his grandparents about the story, along with plenty of other relatives. Over the years, we managed to worm out the correct tale , though it probably would have been best if we had waited until kaasan was ready to tell us herself.
"...I lied because I thought that you two wouldn't be able to handle it. But I'll begin right now.."
---------------
"Saoru-kun..."
Saoru looked up from his novel. As the years had gone by, the half-alien's hair had faded into an even darker shade of dirty blonde, and his red highlights had faded along with it. The only other noticeable difference was that Saoru had begun to wear glasses on some occasions. It apparently came with age as well, ne?
"Is something wrong, Toffee-chan?" Saoru asked, glancing over at his wife as he spoke. It had been a while since he was able to speak with his wife alone, so the adult had been hoping that this would've been good news.
"The meanie aliens are attacking again, Saoru-kun! You've got to help me stop them!" Toffee whimpered, giving a pout as she spoke.
That response caused her husband to promptly fall over. "Eh?" He blinked. "Toffee-chan, you know very well that we gave up our magic lifes when we had Aspen and Soramimi. We can't afford to let them know about our secret." He replied, glancing over at the door to make sure that his children were still sleeping.
"....But you're not an alien, you're just a mage. That's not really that big of a secret, is it..?" Toffee pleaded, giving a look that she knew that her husband couldn't resist.
"...Just be quiet, alright?"
As Saoru moved towards the window, he left behind a somewhat puzzled Toffee. This was perhaps probably the first time that he had let on that he wasn't just a plain mage, but the half-alien had no idea that this was his first time.
....What is Saoru-kun talking about? Why won't he tell me, his own wifey? Toffee bit her lip. But as the adult fell to her knees, she couldn't hear the shrieks of her own children. She couldn't hear the sounds of the townspeople crying out in pain. The only words that brought her back to reality were the shouts of a certain white haired alien..
"You need to be more careful!"
"Kaze-aze? Why ish you here?" Toffee looked up to see the somewhat familiar form of Kaze. But like with Saoru, he had become older and seemed to be a whole lot wiser as well.
"Nevermind that! Just get our children and run!"
"...Our children?" Toffee whispered to herself. ...Kaze-aze and Saoru-kun is the same person? No, it can't be. Saoru's just a mage. He even said so himself! So, why did he lie to me..? The alien had apparently been maturing over the years as well. While Toffee was still her innocent, child-like self - she could at least piece two and two together by this point in time.
"Eh... I mean your children!" Kaze shouted out, seeming pretty embarrassed by the mistake he made.
But he didn't get any time to say anything more. Something slashed at his arm, and blood came pouring out. The alien fell to his knees, but he didn't say anything. He clutched the wound, and it was obvious that he was in a good amount of pain. The blood was getting to the point where it stained the carpets, but nobody cared about that at the moment.
"Kaze-aze! You're clearly not alright, nya!" Toffee insisted. The adult pulled out a bandage and a first aid kit, and tried to cover up the wound. But Kaze refused to take her help.
"This is magic, Toffee-chan. I'm not going to live." A purple light surrounded the alien as he fell to the ground. Toffee's vision became blurry at that moment, but she could clearly see what happened five seconds later.
Her husband was dead.
----------------
Niichan and I were silent. Somebody was actually trying to kill our own mother, but our father took the attack and died from it instead?
"...And that's what happened.." Kaasan's voice wavered as she spoke, and tears were flowing down her face as she spoke. Her clothing was stained with tears, but she wasn't the only one.
"Tousan..." Niichan's voice was barely above a whisper, and he was clutching a kanji necklace tightly. His eyes were closed, but it was clear that he was crying along with me.
I felt somebody touch my shoulder. "Don't worry about your old man - I'm fine. But... I wish I could see you grow up and help you myself..." The voice was so comforting, and his touch made me want to go to sleep against his shoulder. But when I turned around, nobody was there.
....Was that my father?
