[PW - future] Life in a Nutshell

Yeah, I know... I really shouldn't be making up more OCs. Feel free to whack me over the head for that one. Yet, this one pretty much demanded me to write it. While I doubt I'm going to ever continue these characters in the Phoenix Wright universe, they're unique enough to keep writing about.

.. Oh, right! Brownie points to people who get PW references in this piece.

Title: Life in a Nutshell
Summary: Me, Ethan Hazakura.. well, I've got an odd ability, that's for sure.
Disclaimer: Ethan, Lamont, and Damian are mine. Story's mine too. But the Phoenix Wright stuff? Belongs completely to Capcom.

A moonlit meadow lay empty, save for the brilliantly-covered daffodils blooming everywhere and two children laughing in the middle of it all. The boy, roughly about fifteen years of age, was lying with the flowers around him. His companion, a tall black-haired girl, made daisy wreathes around his head.

All seemed peaceful. The river nearby was still. The trees only rustled slightly in the midnight breeze.

"Tell me," The girl was softly whispering to him. "Do you normally talk to spirits like this?"

... Yeah. Talking to a spirit in the middle of the night? Completely normal. But, that's how my life had been for the past few months. I, Ethan Hazakura, am officially a ghost whisperer.

Trust me, I didn't think I'd end up in this position either! My mom, Iris, had finally decided to let me go to the big city to start high school. 'Cause you know, I'd been home-schooled before then. I wanted to experience life. I ended up staying with her old friends the Edgeworths.

Through their son, Lamont, and this crazy babysitter, Damian, I somehow got myself involved in the ghost-calming business. It's not exactly my fault I can see things others can't. I have to admit, though - it's a talent that I've found comes in handy.

Like, for instance, murder trials. Lately, the spirits I've been talking to have all been killed before their time in cold blood. From my talks, we can usually eliminate the defendant by process of elimination. After all, if the person being tried wasn't even at the proper location according to my talks, then how can we have a trial?

(The judge was not amused the first time we tried this.)

I honestly don't know.. how to explain our current case. Or should I explain how I can talk to ghosts? I can't honestly say that it's something I was taught. To me, spirits are tangible beings. I can touch them, see them, and talk to them as if they were normal people.

So what cues me to think they're dead? Usually, the obituaries in the newspaper after I first encounter them. Or sometimes, the spirits will tell me in some shape or form (usually with a surprised, ".... You can see me?")

I've been able to use this to my advantage. And in many trials, they've gotten the defendant off completely! .. I do admit, though, that most of the spirits leave this world once the trial's over. I never get a proper chance to say good-bye other than talking to their graves. I think it's probably a good thing, though.

Oh! I should mention how on Earth I get myself involved in murder trials. To be blunt, Lamont's dad is a world-famous prosecutor - Miles Edgeworth. You've probably heard of him before, haven't you? It's hard not to when he's basically a legend.

(It's okay if you haven't heard of him before. I hadn't either.)

Through Uncle Miles, we've gotten to met plenty of odd people. One of those people was Lilac Daniel. She's apparently an up and coming defense attorney, as well as an old childhood friend of Damian's. Through her, we get to talk about cases and I tell her the clues from the victim that she needs to get by the case.

... I'm not entirely sure what I'm doing is legal or can be considered as forging evidence, but moving on! Lamont loves this entire ordeal. See, both of his parents are prosecutors. He lives and breathes law. He's on the Mock Trial team, he did Youth Legislature in eighth grade.. he even went to Model UN this year! If it involves our country's legal system, you can bet that Lamont Edgeworth is somewhere in there.

In the end, I was dragged into it. Can't really say I love it, but I don't hate it either. Hey, who else can say that they talk to ghosts? (I.. keep that last bit on the DL. I don't want to be put with the crazies)

That's basically my life in a nutshell. Ethan Hazakura, heir to a shrine temple up in the mountains, living currently in the city.. and chases ghosts in the dead of night. It's a miracle I still manage to get straight A's!
