I'm just a kid. Maybe I've grown a little by traveling with my friends and striving to capture as many Pokemon as I can. Maybe I've become wiser after the battles I've had with my trusted Pikachu.

But under all of that, I'm still Ash. I'm still a kid.

So, to me, Misty was just another one of those girls. You know - they're friends. You never gave them a second thought.

I suppose that was why I was surprised when she showed up at my house for my thirteenth birthday, long after she had left my party to go lead the Cerulean Gym in Cerulean City.

She had hugged me, wished me well, and even gave me a present wrapped in blue.

I had thought that all friends did that to their friends on their birthday. I thought all friends smiled and cheered you up when you were down; I thought all friends hugged you and cried with you when you needed them to be with you.

Of course, Misty just wasn't another friend.

I had to find this out the hard way in front of the waterfall, when she... kissed me.

Not every friend kisses you at the end of the day, and smiles nervously afterwards, as if she may have done the wrong thing.

But you know, Misty was more than a friend to me. She was.. you know, I don't even know the answer.

I can tell you, though, that I did kiss her back, and assured her that no matter what, we were still friends - and maybe something more.
