[FF: AC] House
If I have messed up FF7 canon in any way, please let me know. I know it's kind of stupid to write a fanfic on something that you've never played, but hey - it worked for this ficlet? ^^;;;
Title: House

Characters Focused On: Reno, Denzel, Marlene, Cloud, Tifa [mentions Reeve, Yuffie, Barret, and Vincent]

Disclaimer: FF7 (c) Square-Enix, okay?
3 PM. That time of day, especially on a weekday, rung of freedom for all school children... but for two children in particular, freedom wasn't knocking on their doors anytime soon.
One child, Marlene, could care less. She was only six years old, after all, and to her - going home after a long day of school seemed just about right to her.
On the other hand, her "adopted" brother of sorts, Denzel, was less enthusiastic. Judging by the frown on his face and his slow footsteps, he would rather stay here than head back home.
..Just one look at their babysitter of the day would explain his long face. As Reno waited outside for his charges to come, he let a sigh escape his lips. How long would these two kids take just to leave school? Didn't Denzel hate school in the first place?
Out of the corner of his eyes, the redhead could easily spot Denzel walking to him at a snails-pace (no, it was worse than a snail), and Marlene eagerly running in his direction.
"Reno! Reno! You'll never guess what happened at school today!" As Marlene tackled Reno, the redhead's other hand went to Denzel's shoulder.
"What?" The adult asked, giving Denzel a look that the brunette unfortunately knew all too well.
Denzel nodded solemnly. "Sorry, Reno. I'll be faster next time."
The redhead laughed. "You always say that, yo, but do you ever do it? I think not."
Marlene joined in with his laughter, taking the adult's hand. Denzel reluctantly took Reno's other hand, and the trio began to walk off the school campus.
See, the school hadn't been built too far away from their home in the city of Edge, much to Cloud and Tifa's relief (and much to the dismay of their friends and co-workers). After all, that meant that the kids would have to be walked home by someone every day.
One day, it was Vincent (that day was never a good day for both of them), another, it might be Reeve or Yuffie (in Denzel's opinion, Yuffie was never to be trusted with personal belongings. After all, she might steal his homework and never return it back...).
But Denzel's least favorite day of all was Reno day. While Marlene enjoyed it a great deal, Denzel didn't see it as much fun. After all, Reno acted much younger than Cloud (and definitely younger than Denzel, who had convinced himself of acting like someone Cloud's age).
"Denzel? Did you enjoy school?" While it was a pain to answer a question from Reno, Denzel found it surprisingly easy to give a reply to Marlene.
Offering a small smile, he nodded. "Actually, yes. Everyone was excited to know that today was Friday..."
"Oh, I so know the feeling. Back when I was in school, everyone and their dog was happy that it was Friday. ...Oh, crap, that makes me sound old, doesn't it?"
Denzel exchanged glances with Marlene. How old was he again..? Surely not old enough to have a mid-life crisis, right?
Marlene simply giggled, taking out a bar of soap from her school bag. "Reno~ Daddy said that you had to have this every time that you say a bad word..."
Reno made a face. "Your father said that? I thought that Barret wasn't that kind of guy..."
For once, Denzel had the upper edge, judging from the grin that had easily come onto his face. "Of course not... though, we haven't actually heard Barret ever say something like that."
The other brunette climbed onto Reno, sticking the clean bar of soap into the redhead's mouth. "We like to play house, Reno."
Reno's face turned red, coughing as he took the bar of soap out of his mouth. "H-house? Who would you play THAT with?"
Maybe he had said the wrong thing. Marlene frowned slightly, looking over at Denzel.
"Cloud plays with us, and so does Tifa..."
Throwing the wasted bar of soap into a trash can as they passed it, Reno arched an eyebrow. "Oh, really...?"
To his surprise, both of the kids nodded.
"Cloud's our Daddy, and Tifa's our mommy..." She softly replied, finding her position on Reno's shoulders, her feet gently kicking against his chest.
Denzel pressed his lips together. "They do mommy and daddy things - Cloud'll be reading the newspaper like a dad would... Tifa would be making dinner..."
Reno's free hand lightly squeezed Denzel's. "Hey, buddy. While I'm still amazed that you kids got Cloud, of all people, to be soft putty in your hands, I won't blab, okay?"
The brunette rolled his eyes. "That's what you said that one time that Yuffie burned dinner for Vincent..."
Reno let nervous laughter escape his lips. "Oh, come on. That story deserved to be told to the world!"
Marlene's hands went to Reno's hair. "Reno, please don't tell?" She asked sincerely, her eyes slowly beginning to water.
This was almost all too much for the redhead to take in. He placed a hand to his forehead, letting a sigh escape his lips. "Fine, fine. You kids have fun with your mommy and daddy, okay?"
It truly shocked him to see Denzel smiling. As the three stopped in front of the back doors of 7th Heaven, Reno knocked on the door, taking Marlene off his shoulders.
When Tifa opened the door, white apron tied around her waist and a wooden spoon in one hand, she tilted her head to the side. "What took you guys so long?"
Denzel exchanged a smile with Reno. Maybe he wasn't so bad as the brunette had made him out to be... As the two children walked in, they both pressed their hands against the window, watching as Reno left for work.
"...Hey, Mom? Is it time for dinner yet?" He asked Tifa, his blue eyes watching as a faint pink tint came across her face.
She twirled a lock of her dark hair, nodding. "It's time. But Denzel, I thought you hated playing House with us."
He grinned, taking her free hand. "When Cloud's the daddy, how can you..?"
Denzel had a point there. "I suppose we can't argue there. Dinner is served, Denzel. Let's eat!"
He took her hands, gingerly latching onto them. "Let's." He echoed, walking with her to the dining table, where their family awaited them..
