[KH - Threeblade] Experimentation
Title: Experimentation
Fandom: Kingdom Hearts
Universe: Threeblade (next-generation)
Summary: During the summer, Kyros likes to experiment with recipes and spend his afternoons cooking. Primarily because there's nothing else to do, but also partially because it just feels fulfilling.
Notes: Written as a character study! I've been thinking a lot about my Kingdom Hearts OCs lately, and what better way to flesh them out than by writing about them? Granted, some bits and pieces have changed since I last entered this fandom, but hopefully some has remained the same. ♥
Sometimes, Kyros liked to experiment. As he pulled a cookbook from the library selves, he thumbed the pages until he found a recipe he liked and headed to the kitchen. At this hour, his parents weren't home: Dad was working at the bank, and Mom was off managing her art gallery. Akemi was off doing something or another, and so, for the next hour, the kitchen was all his.
He wouldn't have to step past his mother in their small - but well-equipped! - kitchen, nor would he have to fend off numerous questions about the dish in question. Dad had always appreciated the extra food, especially once Kyros had mastered beef stew. Tonight, though, Kyros just wanted some comfort food. Seafood Udon was his bread-and-butter, and a good soup warmed the soul. It would be paired well with some iced tea, and they could eat outside and watch the neighbor's kids play with pretend swords across the beach.
Dad usually told stories of his adolescence, where he and Uncle Sora would visit the island nearby and play pretend with stories of other worlds and stars far beyond the night sky.
As Uncle Sora liked to say, "we each share the same sky, the same destiny."
Sure, Ren rolled his eyes, and Akemi always smothered a smile, but Uncle Sora had a point. No matter how much these worlds differed, the stars would always shine brightly. Uncle Sora didn't really know the constellations by their traditional names, but he and Uncle Riku would map out the locations of far-off towns and legends.
"That's the Land of Departure," Dad said, pointing northeast.
Uncle Sora squinted, nodding in agreement before he added, "And that's Radiant Garden."
Kyros barely remembered Radiant Garden, the town with a tall castle that stretched to the stars, but Uncle Leon and Aunt Aerith and Uncle Cloud lived there. It had almost been eons since he'd last seen Aspen (that super energetic animal lover), and he half-wondered how every single one of them were doing.
Right now, however, he was here, in Destiny Islands, with a boiling pot of udon that smelt absolutely wonderful. He inhaled in the warm broth, seasoning it lightly before adding the rest of the ingredients and letting the pot simmer. When Mom and Dad got home, they wouldn't have to worry about dinner, and Akemi could join them for dessert if she arrived later than usual. (It wasn't necessarily that his mom couldn't cook; rather, it was just that Kyros preferred to, especially if he was stuck home alone.)
He was too old to head to the beach and play - even though he was a mere fourteen - and he was far too young to think about cram school and entrance exams, so he was awkwardly in the middle with more free time than he expected. If he didn't fill his afternoons with cooking, what else could he do?
It wasn't as if he could pick up a toy sword and expect to travel to other worlds unaccompanied. For the time being, he'd have to embrace the world he did have and cherish it with all of his heart.
So, once the udon had finished cooking, he flipped the pages again and settled on a batch of peanut butter cookies. Sure, peanut butter was a bit of a delicacy here, but considering how little he could travel? If he couldn't travel to the worlds, why couldn't he bring the worlds to them? A little experimentation - especially in the kitchen - would never hurt anyone.
