[Kingdom Hearts + Danny Phantom] Playing with Life
Title: Playing with Life
Fandom: Kingdom Hearts + Danny Phantom crossover (no knowledge of either universe is required to understand this fic)
Relationship: Danny Phantom/Olette
Summary: Danny's and Olette's Physics teacher thinks they're on a suicide mission - and thus sends them to a quantum suicide lecture to help them see reason. All Danny and Olette get out of it is.... well, nothing.
Note: Based on the prompt "quantum suicide and immortality." I tried!
In retrospect, Olette really shouldn't have taken Physics with her boyfriend. As it was, they couldn't properly do labs together. Every time they showed up for labs and started working, they managed to spectacularly botch up the lab in such a way that even their teacher's assistant was baffled. As the head professor once told them, "there is no possible way that you two could set a paper towel on fire only using water."
Danny usually shrugged in his sheepish way before asking, "I guess we broke the laws of physics every week?" Unsurprisingly, their professors weren't as amused. Olette might have gotten apology kisses after each lab, but even she couldn't get over just how badly they were doing in the class. Not even the slackers were managing this feat!
After apologising profusely to the professor in charge, he gave them a serious look before asking them if they'd consider attending a lecture for extra credit. They both leaped at the chance. Now, Olette wasn't very sure what quantum suicide and immortality had to do with physics beyond atomic particles, but she supposed she'd humor him. Danny, as usual, protested the entire way.
"Are you kidding?" He moaned, rubbing his temples as they walked halfway across campus for the lecture. "We aren't THAT bad!"
Olette gave her boyfriend a bemused look. "The other students think we're arsonists, and just last week, my TA asked me if I was contemplating suicide - and if I was, to please not use the lab whenever I kill myself. I'm not sure how much worse we can get."
The rest of the way, Danny sulked in silence like a depressed puppy. Olette would've found it incredibly cute if he weren't also cursing under his breath. Maybe she'd have to re-instate that swear jar of hers after all. It'd worked the first time around, until both of them forgot just what words counted as swears and what words didn't. ("I'm pretty sure razzle frazzle and Mickey Mouse aren't bad words!" "Maybe in your part of the world!")
When they entered the auditorium, the lecture hall was mostly packed with people. They squeezed into two back seats just in time for another professor to take the stand and start lecturing. Olette had brought her tape recorder so that she wouldn't have to take notes, but nearly every other student had brought some kind of note-taking device with them. Was this lecture that important?
Danny didn't seem to think so, but then again, Danny also thought they were acing the class.
"As I'm sure some of you are aware, some of us have been playing with the idea of quantum suicide lately..."
Olette stared. Even their professor thought they were out to kill themselves?! Danny gave the professor his rapt attention almost immediately, before giving Olette a look that plainly asked her the same thing.
The professor continued, "Some of us wonder if someone dies in this universe, do they live in another dimension? I know, some of these ideas exist only in science fiction, but even science fiction has basis in reality. Take the outdated flip phone, for example---"
Danny folded his arms and sunk back in his seat even deeper. Olette wasn't too sure she wanted to stick around, as interesting as this professor was. If their Physics professor asked them to listen to a lecture on how dying meant that you lived in another world, she wasn't too sure how that idea boded for their grade.
"Death is inevitable, but even a suicide attempt can have very different results across the multiverse. They may die here, but their efforts will ultimately be in vain---"
The second the professor stopped for intermission, they hightailed it out of there and ran back towards their dorms.
"We're so re-taking Physics next semester. And this time?" Olette folded her arms as she glared at her boyfriend. "We're not going to be lab partners."
