[Tales of] Our Maiden Voyage

A late birthday present for [Bad username or site: shokora_kukki title= @ livejournal.com] because she's just that amazing. ♥ I'm so sorry it took so long.

Title: Our Maiden Voyage
Fandom: Tales of Symphonia
Relationship: Kratos+Lloyd oyako
Summary: Post-Dawn of the New World. Lloyd and Kratos finally go on that sailing journey that Lloyd promised so long ago.
Spoilers?: If you haven't finished ToS1, don't even bother with this fic. It's got heavy spoilers for the first, but not the 2nd.
Disclaimer: None of this is mine. Lloyd Irving, Kratos Aurion, and everything you don't recognize belongs to Namco-Bandai. I'm just borrowing them for a short fanfiction.

Lloyd hadn't been kidding when he asked Kratos to sail around the world with him. Kratos had thought it was a false promise - just something Lloyd said he would do after all was said and done - and didn't think much of it after the two parted ways. There was no place on Derris-Kharlan for boats and sailing. How wrong he was.

Nearly two years later - two long, painful years later - Lloyd energetically summoned his father from Derris-Kharlan to Luin's harbor. Kratos wasn't amused ("Lloyd, what is this all about?"). Yikes. It hadn't even been five seconds and already Lloyd was to blame? Lloyd couldn't help that pout on his face. Couldn't his dad be happy for him for once?

Putting a hand on his hip, Lloyd casually gestured towards a nearby boat tied to a pole, "That."

Immediately, Kratos's face softened. He carefully studied the boat as he walked closer to it. No doubt, this was Lloyd's handiwork. He could sense it everywhere, from the hand-carved posts to the handwritten "S.S Colette" on the side of the bright red sailboat. Raising an eyebrow, Kratos wryly commented, "The S.S Colette?"

"Yeah!" Lloyd cheerfully grinned. "Genis said that I needed to name our boat after a pretty lady..." He trailed off there, his face nearly turning the color of his jacket as he motioned for his dad to follow him.

Kratos merely shook his head, "Heh," as he walked onto the boat. As far as he could tell, nothing had changed. His son still harbored that crush on Colette - were they only ones who couldn't see it at this point? - and they were about to embark on their journey to sail across Aselia. Wait a sec...

"Did you pack enough supplies?"

Lloyd blankly stared back at his father. Kicking off his shoes, Lloyd nodded, "Of course! Dad, do you think I'm an idiot?"

Kratos figured it'd be best if he didn't respond to that remark. Instead, he stared up at the endless sky before them. Why hadn't he rebuked Lloyd yet? Heaven knows that he should: Lloyd had interrupted his existence among the other angels of Derris-Kharlan... he had forcefully pulled him from that long, lonely existence... Perhaps the loneliness had over-ridden all thoughts of punishment. Glancing over at his son, Kratos couldn't help smiling.

Lloyd returned the grin as he rushed up and pulled the sail open. "You ready to get going?"

Couldn't he see the innocent person in his way? Kratos immediately leapt up to help Lloyd untie the rope anchoring them to Luin's harbor. Thank Martel, they just narrowly avoided hitting that other boat... The old man nearby thanked them ("You stupid kids! Get off my pier!") for their hard work.

Mentally groaning, Kratos peered down at his son. "Hm. You've gotten taller."

"Heh, really?" Lloyd now stood on his tip-toes as he swiftly navigated the boat with the sails. "I was wondering if you noticed."

He still managed to be as cheerful as always. Kratos smiled to himself as he sat back down and let his son navigate. In retrospect, that was a mistake. Lloyd had a decent sense of direction, but when he was entrusted to steer and navigate at the same time? It was like asking Raine to cook. Somehow, in the process, the finished product never turned out like it should.

"Lloyd."

"Yes?"

"We're going to---"

Kratos didn't even get a chance to finish his sentence. Before either of them could do anything, the boat had promptly landed on the nearest beach. Lloyd stared glumly at the ship's hull as he let go of the sail. "So much for our maiden voyage." Dropping the ropes to the floor, he then started to tie his shoes.

"Not yet," Kratos chided as he rose and took the ropes again. "It just takes some practice."

Lloyd stared up at his father. "Dad..."

"You said you wanted us to sail together, right? Might as well be now."

Runes appeared underneath his feet. Kratos chanted underneath his breath, "Air Thrust!"

Lloyd suddenly held to the side of the ship as the boat gently rose above the sand and into the gentle waves again. Without warning, the waves fell onto the boat. Lloyd spluttered, "I-I--DAD!"

"We're back on water, aren't we?"

There came the pout again; Lloyd knew he couldn't argue with his father this time. There was a moment of silence as Kratos continued to steer. The sky was still clear. The wind was in their favor. For a maiden voyage, this wasn't bad at all! Yet Kratos knew he shouldn't be the one at the helm. Even if it was horrible.... even if it meant the ship could crash again....

"Here." Kratos handed Lloyd the reins again.

His son stared at the ropes. Then, without any hesitation, Lloyd gleefully took the captain's position again. "All right!"

Their boat was small - and perhaps it was a good thing they both could fly - but tonight? It felt like the world's largest ship. Lloyd warbled off-key songs about Dwarven Vows at the top of his lungs ("Justice, Hope, and Love will always win!") while his father stared at the clouds and kept the ropes steady.

Derris-Kharlan all but forgotten, Kratos pulled on the ropes. "Lloyd?"

"Yeah?"

"... Thanks."

Lloyd shot a smug grin back at his father, "You don't have to thank me. You know I would've dragged you here regardless."

"Mm, perhaps."

The sun continued to beat down upon them; the waves rolled back and forth; and the fish playfully swam around their sailboat. Not even an hour had passed, and Kratos figured they would probably stop by the Tower of Mana in the evening for a well-deserved rest. Lloyd still sung off-key, but at this point, Kratos stopped caring. With just the two of them out on the open sea, everything finally - FINALLY! - felt at peace. For a maiden voyage, this was going to be perfect.
