[Tales of] Mercy in Forgiveness
Title: Mercy in Forgiveness
Fandom: Tales of (Legendia)
Relationship: Senel/Chloe
Rating: PG-13 [for what the whole fic implies... though I think it might even go into R territory a little?]
Summary: Even though he's going to marry Chloe in a few months, Senel still doesn't forgive himself for "cheating on Stella." Angst, naturally, and some reality checks from Chloe naturally follow.
Disclaimer: Like most of these fics, Tales of Legendia does not belong to me: it is property of Namco-Bandai. I'm just borrowing these characters and their world for a quick fanfic.

He was supposed to be happy to be so close to such a beautiful girl. He could practically hear her heartbeat from where he was! Senel couldn't remember the last time he had ever been so intimate with a girl. Not since... not since... He wouldn't let himself think about her. Chloe wasn't Stella.
Setting aside the obvious differences - Chloe was alive, Stella wasn't - they had different sparks. Different temperaments. What made Chloe tick was something Stella didn't even mind. And in return... what made Stella mad didn't even phase Chloe. In every sense of the word, they were polar opposites.
And yet?
Senel didn't regret being with Chloe for one moment. Every time he watched her fight effortlessly, she took his breath away before he remembered he was fighting right alongside her. They were perfect! A team! Norma teased them about it multiple times. "You two are such lovebirds," She had giggled to a confused Senel one day after practice. Naturally, Senel denied it ("She is not my girlfriend! Norma!") but Norma had gotten all the evidence she ever needed.
"Coolidge," He could hear her say from the opposite side of the bed.
Senel rose from under the covers and peered at his half-asleep companion. He paused for a moment, almost as if debating something, before he leaned in and gently kissed her cheek. He then ran his fingers through her hair again.
She pressed her lips, "What're you doing?"
"Nothing," Senel admitted. In a way, it was the truth.
Chloe leaned against his arm as she rolled over. "If you insist."
He waited until she fell asleep again before he stared at the empty ceiling. No matter how many years - no matter how much progress he mad with Chloe - it almost felt like he was still bound to Stella. What did Jay call that legend again? Oh, yes, "Stranged by the Red String of Fate." When Senel had insisted that he was over Stella, it was Jay who shook his head and said everything that Senel wouldn't dare to say.
How could he? Senel had even proposed to Chloe! They were living together!
He had done everything in his power... and yet, he still didn't feel like Stella had forgiven him. How could she, when she was living up in the sky with all the other angels?
In a way, Senel mused to himself as he started to count all the glow-in-the-dark stars, he was kind of pathetic for relying on a dead girl's forgiveness. Surely Stella wouldn't want him to be this upset over love. Over the girl he was going to marry in a short few months.
"Coolidge. You thinking about her again?"
Was it so obvious that even Chloe knew? Senel wrinkled his nose, "... No."
"I can see it in your face, you liar."
He leaned in and stared into her eyes. "Chloe."
Without warning, she kissed him gently. Senel stared as they let go. Silence edged between them for minutes - nearly almost a whole hour - before he broke away and stared down at his sweaty hands.
"What was that for?"
"She forgave you years ago, Coolidge," Chloe smiled gently at him. "So please don't punish yourself anymore. You don't deserve it."
Senel couldn't help smiling back at her. "Thanks."
He nestled under the covers now, with Chloe at his side, and stared up at the stars one more time. As he dozed in and out of consciousness, he couldn't help noticing... the stars were winking. Were they winking at him? The brightest blue star especially shone brighter than usual.
"I forgive you."
For the first night in a long, long time, Senel finally managed to get a good night's sleep.
