[Kingdom Hearts - Kingdom Chronicles] Thanksgiving with the Sorrentinos
Hey, for once I've got a fic that's seasonal and on time! I don't know if I'm getting paid for this anymore, but I promised
pumpkin_bomb ages ago that I'd go ahead and work on this Roxas+Aubrey story for her. I hope you enjoy it, even if the Sorrentinos are being a very derpy family. XD
Title: Thanksgiving with the Sorrentinos
Fandom: Kingdom Hearts - Kingdom Chronicles
Summary: Aubrey knows what she's getting into when she has Thanksgiving at her grandparents' house, but that doesn't mean she has to enjoy it one bit.
Disclaimer: Roxas, Olette, and Kingdom Hearts are property of Square-Enix and Disney, while Aubrey is property of
pumpkin_bomb. However, Jason and Celia Sorrentino are mine, as well as most of the headcanon for Roxas and Olette. I'm just having fun with a story here, okay? No profit intended.
Normally, most families in Twilight Town did not celebrate Thanksgiving. Not with the turkey and the stuffing and the whole ritual that the Sorrentinos loved. Instead, there was usually a quiet ritual and some mention of a poor turkey crying, but everything was peaceful and everything was in its place.
If Aubrey wasn't a shy little girl who didn't know any better, she would have traded that quiet for her family's chaos in mere seconds. From the minute she woke up, she was hastily greeted with her mother's, "Morning, Aubrey! Give me a minute! I'm still making pumpkin bread here!" and a warm, soggy toast and quickly-beaten scrambled eggs.
Staring down at the eggs, Bree sighed hesitantly before eating them with as much cheer as a nine year old girl could muster.
Her father wasn't expected to be home for another two hours -- he was busy rounding at the hospital -- so it would just be her and her mom. Every other day of the year, it would have been a wonderful treat. Bree would have relished "mother-daughter bonding time!"
But it was Thanksgiving. And in the Sorrentino family? Unless you were helping out, you were not a true member of the (frankly) unique family.
Her grandparents would be coming in the door any minute now. Aubrey blinked as she heard the familiar boom of her grandfather ring throughout the household. Her grandfather and father weren't very much alike, now that she really thought about it.
Dr. Jason Sorrentino acted younger than he truly was. Aubrey could hear her mother exasperatedly sigh, "Dad! Was that giant turkey really worth it?"
To which her grandfather always cheerfully admonished, "Why yes, yes it was, my sweetheart."
Grandmother was also a doctor, but she never seemed to actually be working. Aubrey sometimes wondered where Grandmother's patients came from, since they would always randomly approach her in the stores -- but Grandmother's eccentricities were better saved for another story.
"Grandpa," Aubrey cheerfully called once she finished eating breakfast, "You brought the giant turkey again?"
"That I did," Jason proudly responded, coming towards his granddaughter and ruffling her hair. "You wanna help me put it out?"
"You've very capable of doing it yourself, and you know it," Grandmother Celia jested, tying an apron around her waist as she began to help Olette in the kitchen. "You know Roxas's sisters'll be here this evening, and we don't want to make them feel like they traveled all this way for nothing."
Ah, yes... did Roxas neglect to mention he wasn't an only sibling? Because he certainly wasn't. Despite Jason and Celia not having any kids when they adopted Roxas, they soon gave birth to two beautiful twin girls. While Roxas often didn't spend time with them, he enjoyed seeing them when he could.
(Roxas was honestly the "black sheep" of their family, in the loosest sense of the word. His family had welcomed him with open arms - grandparents and other miscellaneous relatives included.)
So while Aubrey didn't see her family often - they were too busy living their normal lives outside Twilight Town - they'd always get together for Thanksgiving. And that, too, was something Roxas and Olette liked to forget most years.
Once Jason came through the door with that giant turkey, all thoughts of a normal Thanksgiving had flown out the window. Aubrey didn't mind, really! Her family was fun to hang out with.
"I'd love to help," She responded softly. "Thank you, Grandpa."
"Ha!" Jason laughed at his wife. "See that?"
Celia and Olette just exchanged amused looks as both Jason and Aubrey headed out the front door and into the Sorrentino family's front lawn. Carefully inflating the giant turkey, Jason knelt down and kept the turkey stable as Aubrey pinned it down with rope.
Dylan and Alex rode by on their bikes just then. Hiding behind her grandfather, Aubrey watched amusedly as Dylan cheekily grinned, "Yo! Dr. Sorrentino! Isn't that supposed to be on your dinner table?"
Alex chimed in, "Cause that's one giant turkey!"
"Very funny, boys," Jason laughed. "Humor an old man one more time, will you?"
"Of course!" They both cheerfully replied. Before they rode off into the distance, Dylan blew a kiss towards Bree, "Happy Thanksgiving, Bree!"
Aubrey blushed, tugging on her grandpa's sleeve. "Grandpa?"
"Don't listen to them," Jason chuckled. "Boys will be boys. You know... your father and Hayner were like that all the time as kids."
This wasn't news to Aubrey - not after the stories she'd heard from Pence and Olette - but she nodded all the same. Once the turkey was stable, she and Jason headed back inside. The aroma of roasted turkey awaited them, and Aubrey couldn't help wishing that the night would come sooner.
"Bree!"
Happily, Aubrey found herself being lifted into the air by her father. Smiling, Aubrey said softly, "Dad! Welcome home!"
"Thanks," Roxas laughed, setting her down gently. "How much longer do we have to wait?"
"It'd be done sooner if you could help," Olette cheerfully teased him.
Roxas grinned back, "I already hung up the lights. Wasn't that enough?"
"Oh you," Celia sighed, stirring a pot of stew, "Don't you want to help make stuffing at least?"
"I'll help with setting the table," Roxas nodded wisely. "You don't want me in the kitchen, Mom. I'll leave everything to the experts."
Jason ruffled Aubrey's hair again, "Come on, squirt. We've got quite a bit of clean up to do."
Without a single complaint, Aubrey gathered the eating utensils and carefully set the formal dining table for their evening meal. Even though her family was loud and sometimes violent, she found herself realizing that she wouldn't have it any other way. It was weird, to hear all this noise in her house, but hey. That's what family was all about, right?
