It Takes Two: Chapter Twenty Three
Oh jeez. XD I know that some people here will be all "lolwhut" for this, but I've honestly really gotten into the Spiderman Loves Mary Jane series. (It's currently released in graphic novel format, so if you see it at your bookstore, buy it! The manga style helps, yes, but it's not like much manga I've read.)
Title: Algebra Homework
Fandom: Spiderman Loves Mary Jane
Pairing: Mary Jane Watson x Peter Parker
Disclaimer: Not mine in the least. D: This belongs to the wonderful minds at Marvel (specifically Sean McKeever, who came up with this universe)
Notes: Takes place after issue #20. I personally haven't gotten around to buying the new issues - and I heard that I shouldn't, so I'm doubting it ATM.
Mary Jane didn't want to admit that she had been wrong to reject Peter Parker for Spiderman. He was her algebra tutor, her friend who could recite the periodic table backwards without pausing; in short, the typical geek. And Spiderman? He was mysterious.
They'd gone out on a date a long time ago. But it wasn't like she imagined it would have been. Liz was right - realities would always fall short of her fantasies. MJ just didn't think it would fall that short. It was bizarre.
For someone so mysterious, he was completely boring on their date because he wouldn't talk that much about himself. Of course, later, they'd talk on the rooftops, and Spiderman actually admitted to liking a girl that wasn't Firestar.
It was weird. MJ thought she would've been completely jealous. (But did she have any right to be, especially since she was dating Harry Osbourne on and off?) But she wasn't. Not really.
She wanted him to be happy.
(But she still sometimes wondered what it would've been like if they had been dating.)
And yet... the news that Peter was completely free made her dance up and down for joy. They were friends again. Just the way she wanted it to be.
They began to do homework in her room again. Algebra dominated their conversations most of the time; MJ found herself finally being able to do those quadratic equations. Sometimes, they'd listen to the news and watch Spiderman do his thing.
News watching became rarer by the day. But she always managed to smile as she finished up her problems and looked up at the masqued crusader.
"You know," MJ randomly muttered to herself. "I hope that girl he likes likes him back."
Peter looked up from his homework, blinking. "H-huh?"
MJ smiled apologetically at him. "I just heard he liked someone," She said. "I just hope she likes him back."
Hmmm.... Peter was blushing? This was unusual, especially since he seemed so level-headed. "Yeah," He finally replied. "Though I dunno. What if that girl's repulsed by what she sees underneath that mask? He could be wearing one just to hide his ugly face."
MJ pouted, now sitting beside her tutor on her bed. "Peter. He's a perfectly sweet guy. It's just... I want him to be happy, you know?"
There was an oddly solemn look on Peter's face as he looked over at the television. "If he's got friends like you, then I think he's happy too."
"Yeah, you're right," MJ concurred, resting her head on his shoulder. Peter flinched - why was she doing that now? - but let her sleep beside him as he finished his last problems. "... But you know, Peter. You and Spiderman are very much alike. You could almost be brothers."
Peter stared at her.
"And then maybe Firestar and I are sisters..."
He laughed. "Oh jeez," He smiled, gently placing her head on top of her pillow. "Who knew you could sleep talk?"
Gently placing a blanket over her covers, Peter then stepped out the door and smiled at her for the last time that evening. "Night, MJ. I'll see you later."
She watched him leave with one eye open, then closed it as she slowly drifted back to her land of dreams and fantasies.
