[Twilight] Daybreak (Part IV)
This is finally finished~ /o/ Really a shame that this couldn't be part of my NaNo, because I'm sure this is at least 10k (the most I've ever done on a fic). I'm not sure if there are going to be sequels, but I do know that Daybreak's story is far from over and deserves a few more vignettes before I can let it die.
(Again, I'll post details of this AU later, when I can actually think straight.)
Title: Daybreak (Part IV)
Fandom: Twilight [AU]
Summary: Loose ends are tying up as Bella prepares for her junior prom, and everything's falling into place.
Disclaimer: Leaf and angelic interpretation are the only things that belong to me. Dx Everything else belongs to SMeyer.
3o.
Alice hadn't lied about calling Charie. He called her while the two were in Seattle, asking her if the shopping trip with Alice was going well. Bella had to hand it to Alice: she planned thoroughly. She was tight-lipped too. Whenever Bella tried to ask her about the conversation she had had with Edward, the brunette expertly evaded the conversation with a quick-witted remark about a dress and how gorgeous it would look on Bella.
Yet Bella had the distinct feeling that they weren't here to buy dresses. Every time she was forced to buy on a dress, Alice took quick notes and just made her try on the next one. (What were they here to do, then?)
The dress shopping took about an hour and a half, but it felt like so much longer. Bella cheered inwardly with relief when the two were walking through the hallways of the mall, lingering every now and then at an interesting store display.
Bella couldn't help making a face at a toy store display. "Oh jeez. Knowing Edward, he'd probably jump at the chance to buy one of these toys."
"He likes Pokemon," Alice bemusedly questioned, already taking Bella inside the store.
"Unfortunately," Bella sighed, quickly walking to the aisle and picking out the first toy that caught her eye. She paid for it at the register and walked out with it (and a pack of playing cards she bought for Jacob) just as quickly. She blushed a little, realizing that Alice was still looking at her.
"You knew I was going to go in there, didn't you?"
She nodded. "You care a lot for him, right? It's fine, really."
And then her eyes ravenously stared at the Bath and Body Works across from them. Bella groaned. This. Was. Going. To. Be. A. Long. Evening.
31.
She was absolutely exhausted when she came back home to a full house. Edward was sitting on the couch with Charlie, engrossed in a soccer game of some kind (looked British); Leaf and Jacob were happily playing a game of Egyptian War; and Elizabeth was making dinner.
No one particularly pulled off the self-absorbed aura well. Edward stared at the toy store bag in Bella's hands. "I thought you were going shopping for the prom," He confusedly muttered.
She shrugged. "I thought so too. It looked like Alice just wanted to hang out with me. We have extremely different tastes, though. She's more of a girly-girl than I'll ever be."
Jacob chuckled softly to himself; Leaf used this distraction to his advantage and scored yet another few cards. Taking the toy out of her bag, she walked over to Edward and handed him the soft plush toy. "Here," She said. "I knew you'd totally want something like this."
He blushed, ruffling its feathers a little as he studied it. "T-thanks. You didn't have to get me anything."
"I know," She happily replied. "But I wanted to."
"Aw," Jacob cut in. "Isn't that sweet. The two lovebirds are already acting like a married couple!"
She glared at him, saying, "Then you don't want your gift?"
He grinned. "Bella, you didn't have to--" And then he stared at the pack of playing cards. Amused, he said, "Yay for a new deck?"
Leaf and Charlie laughed as Bella apologetically shrugged. "I also bought some makeup and cherry chocolate for Leaf."
Elizabeth waltzed in, setting a tray of tea at the table as she sat down on another chair. "It sounds like you had a fun day, Isabella."
Bella blushed, nodding before she too sat down and watched Jacob and Leaf go at their card game while Edward named his new stuffed animal and Charlie bemusedly watched both his soccer game and the card game at the same time. Life felt wonderful.
32.
But of course, no one could forget about the prom. Bella tried to forget; she really didn't want to remember it. Dancing was not her forte, and well... she didn't have a date. She was pretty sure Edward was going with some other girl, and Jacob didn't even attend Forks High.
It wouldn't be much of an issue for her to sit at home and watch a movie with Leaf. Unfortunately, Leaf remembered the prom all too well when they drove down to a Blockbuster to rent movies for that following weekend.
"Bella, what are you wearing for the prom?"
She had shrugged, taking a random movie (All Dogs Go to Heaven) from the shelves. "I don't even think I'm going."
"Oh. But Mister Edward said he was taking you."
He was? This was news to her. She frowned, quickly paying for the rentals and driving them back to her home in that giant, monstrous truck of hers. She didn't want Edward to take her! Couldn't they just have their nice, quiet evening at home with angel doggies saving kids' lives?
Probably not. Because Alice was sitting on the couch when they both came home, and it was Alice who smoothly handed her a black sack containing her prom dress.
"I'll see you tomorrow night," She called before disappearing as mysteriously as she had arrived. Bella sighed, but Leaf only laughed at his friend's misery.
"Looks like you're going to the prom after all."
33.
The next day dragged on so quickly that Bella couldn't believe it was already evening. She quietly stared at the dress from her mirror. It was gorgeous - too beautiful for someone like her - and she was sure that Edward probably was getting ready by now.
Finally getting the courage to put that dress on, Bella swept makeup onto her face and gently put the dress on before styling her hair into a loose ponytail. She added pale blue ribbons for effect, and placed a small smile as she added pale blue flats to her feet. (No high heels for this klutz!)
She slowly descended the stairs to a stunned father and beautiful prom date. So Edward had been planning to take her to the prom! He looked really cute with his red hair slightly messy, and his tuxedo just added to his charm. His corsage was a pale blue flower to match hers.
She found herself jumping into his arms and him laughing to keep the both of them from falling. Leaf took pictures; Charlie could barely keep a straight face as he watched the two pose for a myriad of pictures.
"Keep Bella safe," He grunted before Edward took Bella by the hand and drove her away to the gym.
34.
Bella pouted the entire way there. Edward couldn't help laughing at her face as he glanced over at her. The roads zoomed by them as they drove to the gym, but neither of them would speak to the other. Bella didn't quite understand why. Didn't Edward know how much she hated dancing? Didn't he know how much she refused to walk inside that gym and stay there the entire evening?
She groaned as they got out of the car and slowly walked to their destination. "Steady," He whispered to her as they entered the gym. For a high school prom, it felt wonderful; there was a live band playing, streamers floating everywhere, and people dancing like there was no tomorrow.
Alice and her blond boyfriend (or was he her brother?) were there, keeping away from the other couples in a corner of the room. Bella had a sinking feeling that the other students were avoiding them on purpose. After all, the Cullens were wildly beautiful beyond belief. And well... Bella and Edward weren't.
"Bella," Alice happily called as she and her boyfriend strolled over to where they were. "You actually came!"
"Yep," Bella embarrassingly smiled. "We did."
Edward grinned. "It wasn't an easy feat. Thanks, Alice."
Alice's boyfriend crossed his arms. Edward then added, "Oh, Jasper? I thought you weren't going to be here tonight. I don't see Rosalie or Emmett, anyhow."
"Alice made me," Jasper sighed. "The others have better things to do tonight."
"Lucky them," Bella smiled. For once, she and Jasper seemed to be in total agreement. It also... felt like the entire room was a little happier. Their moods had been changed entirely. (It felt amazing and beyond description. Really!)
A fast-paced song started, and Edward turned towards Bella. "You want to dance?"
She shook her head, pushing Edward towards the crowd. "No. I know you want to, though, so don't let me stop you." He frowned, but obeyed her as he made his way to the middle of the crowd and immediately commadeered the dance floor.
35.
A few dances later (and two glasses of punch for Bella), the two Cullens and Bella had a nice conversation while Edward was cutting it out on the dance floor with Jessica and a few of the other juniors.
"He seems like a nice person," Jasper remarked, watching as Edward dragged a few more people onto the dance floor. Bella couldn't help nodding in agreement to his statement.
"He really is," Bella beamed. "It's like he truly cares about everyone and wants them to be happy. He's... just Ed."
Alice laughed. "Looks like he's heading over to you."
True to her word, Edward was right beside Bella as he whispered, "Let's dance."
Bella opened her mouth to speak, but she was pushed into the middle of the crowd to dance, and... she found herself dancing along to the rhythm and pace that Edward had set. She may have not been wearing high heels, but those shoes were really quite loose...
Her arms were flailing... she fell to the ground...
And so did the rest of the dance floor. "Hurry," Edward whispered, taking Bella's hand as they ran from the gym. "Let's get out of here before anyone notices!"
Unfortunately for them, Alice and Jasper had noticed. Alice sighed to herself, placing a hand under her chin. "Shame," She said. "They would've made this prom a lot more interesting."
"Then," Jasper began. "Shall we go home?"
"That, Jasper, would be lovely."
36.
Bella laughed as the two hurriedly drove back to her house. "You planned this all along, didn't you?"
"Guilty as charged," Edward grinned. "I knew you really didn't want to be there, but we had to please Alice just by showing up."
Bella leaned back in her seat and happily stared at the ceiling of the car. "Thanks, Edward."
"You're welcome."
"So..."
"So?"
"What now?"
Edward looked thoughtful for a moment. "Mmm... why don't we see those new episodes of Pokemon? Or watch a movie? Or have one of those slumber parties? Something fun. That doesn't involve dancing."
"That sounds wonderful," Bella smiled. "I think a movie marathon slash sleepover's grand. You wanna go call Jacob for me?"
"Sure," Edward replied as he pulled out his cell. "Leaf and Charlie aleady know, so they should've called Billy."
"Shame. I didn't want any more prom pictures."
He laughed. "Too bad. Looks like you're going to have to live with a few thousand more."
She stuck out her tongue, laughing along with him as they drove off into the night sky and back into their own peaceful little world.
