Title: Daybreak (Part III)
Fandom: Twilight [AU]
Summary: The identity of her guardian angel is revealed! Oh, and what's this about Alice Cullen and the prom?
Disclaimer: Again, Leaf and my vision of angels are the only things that belong to me. Everything else belongs to SMeyer.
21.
Two carefree months had passed and Edward's basketball days had come to an end. It almost felt like her family consisted of her, Charlie, Leaf, Edward, Elizabeth, Billy, and Jacob, as Leaf's family was still recovering from their attack two months ago. To accommodate all these people, she even bought a new round table as they talked and laughed over things that happened in school to Bella's klutziness ("there goes danger-prone Bella!") to Elizabeth's business taking off.
After dinner was finished and everything was cleaned up, Edward and Jacob would get out the playing cards and shuffle them together. Their card game changed from time to time, but they usually played them in the same order: James Bond, Egyptian War, Blackjack, and Speed. Edward had been a little slow learning the games the first time, but he had been a fast learner and was quickly beating Jacob at his own game.
Leaf was fascinated by this exchange. He sat there, wide-eyed, as Jacob and Edward quickly exchanged cards for the other. It was as if all signs of Bella's attack had been forgotten and life had moved on as normal. No... that wasn't quite it. Alice called once a week to make sure that Bella wouldn't think of entering that forest again - what was wrong with it? It was just a forest. Why would some Cullen be worried?
She scooted herself closer to the couch, letting herself lean on it as she absentmindedly turned the television on. The Pokemon theme song rang out throughout the room; Jacob was able to score a win through Edward's distraction.
"Ed?"
Edward's eyes sparkled as he stared at the screen. "This is quite fascinating," He grinned. "How come I haven't heard of this before?"
Jacob and Bella exchanged glances. "You mean..."
Bella finished, "You haven't seen Pokemon? Like, ever?"
Edward shook his head, but refused to take his eyes off the screen even as Jacob started the next round. Sighing, he turned his attention to Leaf. "Let the animemus dorkus watch his newfound love. Leaf, you wanna play?"
Leaf nodded enthusiastically, taking Edward's place as the two started a new card game. Bella sighed as she scooted closer to Edward and leaned on his shoulder. "Jeez," She murmured. "You're such a kid."
22.
Bella finally got her chance to look up her angels the following weekend. While Charlie, Elizabeth, and Edward were making plans to go to Port Angeles for dinner, Bella stayed upstairs to use her dinosaur computer and access the internet.
At first, she couldn't come up with much. Most of the results regarding angels were to summon your guardian angel - but none of them seemed feasible. She didn't really think her guardian angel was that attracted to burning incense. Didn't that stuff smell?
Then there were the random legends, like how the French people used to greet people as well as their guardian angels and still have the phrase "an angel passed" whenever there's a lull in the conversation. Bella couldn't help smiling at a few of them; they seemed really sweet.
There was one site that was rather interesting, but her teacher had mentioned that it was fake and shouldn't be trusted. Yet... the legend was interesting. Guardian angels - and any angel that associated with humans - were lowly? It was a thought she couldn't quite wrap her head around.
"Bella?"
Edward was peeking through her door. "May I come in?"
She hurriedly tried to close her window, but Edward had already seen it. He sat down on her bed and sighed, kicking against her bedframe lightly. "You still interested in knowing your guardian angel?"
"I saw him, Edward. Don't make me think I was dreaming!"
To her surprise, he immediately hugged her. "I believe you," He replied solemnly. "I just don't think you should be wasting your time trying to understand him. He's always with you."
"Edward... you can't be..."
He nodded, letting go of her and staring into her with green eyes. She concentrated, watching as a sudden glow came around him and his eyes became a shade of pale blue. "Yes," He replied in that sing-song voice of the angels before reverting to his normal form.
She shivered, turning her gaze back to her computer. "... You really are my guardian angel."
23.
It was so weird. Edward was standing in her room - Edward was the angel who saved her from those monsters. She slowly rose from her seat and stood before him. He blinked, watching as she stood on tip-toes and lightly traced across his face.
"You don't look like an angel," She said softly. "And you certainly don't feel like an angel."
"I had to blend in somehow," He shrugged, taking her hand. "I wanted to watch you as a human."
She paused for a moment. ".... Please don't tell me you watch me sleep at night."
He stared. "W-whaaaa? Why would I want to watch you sleep at night?"
"I dunno," She pouted, now tracing patterns on his right arm. "It just kinda seems like something guardian angels would do."
"Bella, angels need sleep too. I just put a shield around your room and go to bed. I don't have time to watch you snore."
"I don't snore!"
He rolled his eyes. "Not according to Charlie."
Argh... she could feel her face turning at least three different shades of red at this point in time. Burying her hands in her hands, she muttered, "Charlie."
Laughing, he opened the door and bowed slightly. "Come on. We've got a city to see."
24.
Thankfully, Charlie didn't drive his police car to Port Angeles. Elizabeth opted to sit in the front, leaving Edward and Bella to sit in the back. Bella sighed, watching the surroundings zoom by her.
How was she supposed to talk to him now? He was supposed to be her nuisance; the boy who would always be with her when she just wanted to be alone. She felt absolutely useless. What else was she supposed to do now? Just live a peaceful life with her guardian angel, friends, and family? What else was there to do in life?
Edward was sleeping next to her. She supposed he didn't get much sleep last night; he was busy with school, protecting her, and living his own life. She leaned against his shoulder and closed her eyes. They'd be there soon enough.
And hopefully, she'd find something - anything - to do with her life. She couldn't be babied and live a normal life. It just wasn't possible when you had a scatterbrained mother who always needed a helping hand. She wouldn't have had to move to Forks and meet Edward if Renee hadn't remarried.
But why hadn't Charlie remarried? He was a nice enough guy. Bella frowned. Maybe some things were better left unknown.
25.
Edward and Bella were left to their own devices after Charlie and Elizabeth had dropped them off at the boardwalk. Smelling the sea air, Bella couldn't help smiling as they passed the tourist-y shops. It felt beautiful, watching families go by with their children.
She walked ahead of Edward, trying her best to keep him from touching her hand. (He hadn't thankfully noticed her use of him as a pillow) What else was there to say? She needed closure.
"Did you know I would be moving to Forks?"
Edward nodded, easily keeping up with her as they passed each storefront. "Yes. I was assigned to you last summer and moved to Forks in the fall so that I could know the townspeople better."
"So, you coming ahead of me was on purpose?"
"Yes."
His one word answers were scaring her. Perhaps he was afraid to tell her the truth? Finally taking his hand, she whispered, "Please. Tell me everything. I want - no, I need - to know."
He ruefully smiled, letting her stay close to him. "I'm sorry, Isabella, but I can't. That's... the code of the angels. It was bad enough that I even told you the truth."
"Then... can I ask you one more question?"
"Maybe. What is it?"
She looked up at the sky. "Why me? Why now? I'm such a klutz, you know, and I'm always getting myself into scrapes. But why are you showing yourself to me now?"
"Because I recently became your guardian," He said slowly. "And... because they think something's going to happen to you now that you're in Forks. But I'm not really sure what."
Something about that answer satisfied her. She was going to play an important role in the future, and Edward is here to make sure she's okay. Nodding, she pointed towards a crafts shop. "Hey, can we go here?"
He grinned, "Of course!", as he led her into the store.
26.
The rest of the evening went off without a hitch. Bella blissfully sighed as she and Charlie walked home after dropping off Edward and his mother. Charlie smiled at Bella before plopping down on the couch and picking up the remote. Men. It seemed that they always wanted to watch some sort of football game.
Leaf sat on the floor, intently staring at his cards. He flipped one over and sighed, rearranging the cards into a messy pile. "That game did not go so well."
Bella laughed, sitting down beside him. Leaf cleaned up his cards and motioned for Bella to follow him upstairs into the guest room that Leaf was currently residing in. Charlie gave them a nod of acknowledgment, and they moved onto the middle of Leaf's bed.
He tucked his hair behind his pointy ears and started shuffling the cards for their game of Blackjack. Bella, however, stared.
"Y-your ears..."
Leaf blushed, pulling his hair towards him. Unfortunately, his sleeves drooped and Bella could make the faint outline of a green-blue tattoo on his arms.
"... What are you?"
He continued shuffling the cards, handing half the deck to Bella and keeping half for himself. "I cannot tell you."
Bella leaned in, "Why?"
"For the same reason Mister Edward cannot tell you about the angelic laws."
Bella's eyes widened; she scooted back as she pouted. "You mean you knew he was my guardian angel?"
"Not immediately," Leaf laughed. "But he told me before he came to see you. He wanted to tell me that I had made a mistake about him. ... His kind did not attack my brother and sister."
"Then... what did?"
Leaf's face immediately turned grave as he drew his first card (looks like they were playing war). "Would you believe me if I told you?"
Bella thought about it, drawing her card (Leaf won this round). "... Yes. I would."
"... My brother and sister were bitten by vampires."
Leaf wasn't too surprised to see Bella's face becoming paler by the second. She politely put her cards on top of Leaf's, saying that she really needed to get to bed, and hurried to her bedroom.
"I'm sorry, Edward," Leaf murmured. "I shouldn't have told her."
27.
Bella closed the door abruptly, leaning against it as she breathed heavily. First Edward was her guardian angel. Then Leaf's not human (but he won't tell her what he is), and now he says that his family was attacked by vampires?
None of this absolutely made any sense. Neither did Alice's constant reminders to never visit the forest - but at least she made attempts to explain why ("The forest's dangerous! And you're such a klutz. I'd hate to have my foster dad treat you in the ER for something stupid like that, you know?"). No one else bothered to tell her why Edward was her guardian angel or why Leaf and vampires existed.
It was like Forks was the gathering place for all magical creatures and Bella was the catalyst for everything to happen. But she wouldn't - couldn't - let something that big happen. She was just a normal human. A normal human who deserved to live a normal life.
That is, if she could ever get over the fact that her fly on the wall is actually an angel. Without thinking, she logged onto her computer and started to look up fantasy races. Tomorrow, she would ignore Alice's warnings and entrer the forest.
She needed closure. If nothing else, she could get over this whole incident and forget it ever happened. She could have human friends like Jacob, Jessica, and Angela (that quiet kid who always sat with them at lunch). Life would be normal... right?
28.
Tomorrow couldn't have come sooner. Bella leaped out of bed, dressed quickly into something comfortable, brushed her hair, and hurried downstairs before Edward, Leaf, Jacob, or anyone who happened to be at home would notice her.
She fixed herself a bowl of cereal, left a note for Charlie ('Going to the forest outside town. Don't worry - I brought pepper spray with me. Love, Bella.') and closed the door behind her.
Alice was standing outside waiting for her. Bella jumped. "A-Alice! It's so good to see you again!"
"Sorry to be so sudden," Alice sweetly smiled, peering behind Bella and into the empty house. "But I heard that you hadn't made any plans for prom."
Prom? Omigosh, she had completely forgotten about it! Not that she had paid much attention to Prom anyways. She was too busy worrying about supernatural creatures these days, and she had schoolwork and a house to take care of. There was no room for a simple school dance in her life. (And well, she couldn't dance. And she didn't have a date. So she wasn't going.)
"Yeah," Bella said slowly, blinking. "Why do you care?"
"Because," Alice sang. "I want to go shopping for a dress with you! Rosalie's already got one from a couple years back, but I've outgrown mine. Please~?"
Both girls heard the roar of an engine, and stared as an old Volvo parked beside Bella's monstrous truck. Edward climbed out and walked up to the two girls. He raised an eyebrow at Alice, then at Bella.
"What're you two doing up so early in the morning?"
29.
"..."
For once, Bella was left completely speechless. If it were just Edward, she could make a speech about going back to the forest to check things out for herself. But since Alice was here too... jeez. The Cullens really were a nuisance.
Alice smiled deviously at them. "I wanted to ask Bella if she wanted to go prom shopping with me today. We were going to drive up to Seattle."
"But Bella's not going to the prom," Edward insisted. "She never mentioned it to me, at least."
Bella nodded. She liked that idea. Please, Ed, win this argument! Alice, however, wasn't deterred in the least. "Oh, I just wanted her opinion on a couple of dresses. Mr. Swan won't mind. I called him yesterday to let him know about it!"
(Really? She already called? Dang, this girl was thorough.)
Edward turned to face Bella. "Are you sure you want to go to Seattle?"
He blinked. Where Bella had been before, she was now currently in the Mercedes that Alice had driven off in - and Alice obviously had no intentions of letting Bella go. Now only Alice stood as she looked over Edward.
"She can't go into the forest," Alice explained.
Edward raised an eyebrow. Alice sauntered over to him, smiling that pixie smirk as she crossed her arms. "You mean you think I couldn't tell that you're not human?"
"Then you're admitting that you're not human either," Edward pointed out with a bemused smile.
Alice shrugged. "You're not going to tell on our lifestyle. You don't seem like you'd get much pleasure out of it."
"Not really," Edward admitted. "But why can't Bella go back into the forest? I could've sworn those two vampires are long gone."
Shaking her head, Alice replied, "She figured out somehow that someone in the forest was attacked by vampires two and a half months ago - and she was going to investigate. Aren't you trying to keep her away from that kind of supernatural stuff?"
"I was trying to. But... I think that Bella needs to see these things for herself. If she wants to investigate, let her. She's only human."
"And that's why our friends almost got her last time. Unfortunately for you, they're still here."
"No wonder," Edward sighed, shifting his weight to the other foot. "... I suppose I owe you one, Alice."
She turned towards the car, waving to him as she called, "Then take Bella to the prom! I bet she'll love it!", before leaving him to watch their disappearing act.
