The thought of having children didn't occur to many of the cafe employees until a rush of orders came in one day for baby showers and first birthdays of children. Ichigo and Berii were instantly working on the cupcakes that the orders requested; the others could easily sense that children was something that was second nature to them.
As Retasu finished piping the icing on one cake, the green-haired girl pushed her glasses further up her nose. It wasn't much longer now until they would deliver the orders to the customers... they were almost done as well.
Ryou hadn't bothered to help them, as usual. The blond stood at the corner of the kitchen, fingering the order in his hands. "...So many children come into the world these days," He murmured.
Ichigo glanced over at her employer, as if she knew what he was going to speak about. It was really moments like these that got Retasu anxious. She knew that Ichigo and Ryou really were nothing more than brother and sister (once, last week - Ichigo had slipped and called her employer 'oniichan', much to everyone's amusement), but they had always had some close bond.
Retasu too had noticed the awkwardness in Ryou's voice as the subject of children and their parents had been mentioned. (Purin was awkward about it as well - that was the real reason why the subject was quickly changed) Purin, however, was like a child when it came to talk about babies. It was easy for her to talk on and on about such; Ryou, on the other hand, was still as awkward-feeling.
Not knowing what to say, she instead began work again. Taking a spare cupcake from the storage, the porpoise mew mew began to slowly pipe icing on top.
The work was slowly dying down; everyone was finishing up the final touches on the various pieces. When the last required piece had had its decoration finished, Keiichiro was called to inspect.
Maybe Retasu had imagined it, but the others were nervous about the inspection this time. Keiichiro said nothing - just smiling if the job was perfect. When he came around to her pieces, the adult gently tapped the girl on the shoulder.
"We're finished, Retasu-chan."
It was no wonder that she was naturally flustered at his words. "I-I am so sorry, Keiichiro-senpai," She said, blushing.
He gently shook his head. "It's fine," The adult replied, glancing down at the cupcake. "Your work looks great."
Keiichiro then moved on forward to the other pieces. Ichigo smiled at her friend, giving her the thumbs-up sign.
Berii signaled for the others to begin packaging their masterpieces, so they did. While this was beginning to go on, Retasu placed down her icing pipe. She gently scattered some sprinkles on top, then carefully held in both of her hands as she walked over to her employer.
"G-good evening, Shirogane-s-san..." She said nervously, extending the cupcake to him.
He blinked, taking it from her hands. "Retasu-san?"
She blushed. "W-well, you were looking a little un.. uneasy at the whole topic about children and all..."
Sensing her uneasiness, he managed a smile as he took a bite of her cupcake. "It's just what I needed. Thank you," He said somewhat cheerfully. Once he had finished, he leaned in, planting a kiss on her cheeks.
They had yet to hear the whistles and cheers coming from the other employees. Frankly, the two had turned a deaf ear to all outside noise at the moment.
Retasu managed a laugh. "N-no problem. Are you in a good mood now, S-shirogane-san?"
He nodded, patting her shoulder. "I'm fine. You'd better hurry on and get the other packages done, though."
Retasu nodded, taking his cue. She took her spot in the packaging line, laughing along somewhat cheerfully with the others as she resumed work. Ryou leaned against the wall, letting a sigh of relief escape his lips.
Today wasn't going to be so bad after all.
