New Beginnings: Chapter Three
Okay, so I got another chapter done. I really don't know how long this story'll last, since I just write about the mages whenever I feel like it. In Kokoro, I'm the only one rping the majority of them, so it gets boring very quickly. ^^;; However, I hope you enjoy it. (Kaijou's awesome, by the way, even if he only appears once or twice in the entire story..)

New Beginnings: Chapter Three
Our Day Together
This would mark the first weekend that the mages would spend together. Shikari and Hikari had thought it best if the six of them would learn to get along by spending time together outside of school, much to everyone’s dismay (even Ari didn’t want to go along with this, but it had to be done).
So, there they were, all six of them, sitting down at a table at the infamous Sutori Café. Since neither Shawn nor Kyr had heard of the café before now, the other four thought it would be a perfect meeting place – it would really introduce the two boys to the magical community, since every mage was seen here at one point in time or another.
“What do you guys think of Sutori?” Shikari had asked them as they sat down in a plush booth, asking a waiter for the menus shortly afterwards.
Shawn didn’t respond. The redhead hadn’t sat down at the booth yet – he was too enthralled with everything going on in here. His aquamarine eyes would constantly flicker around the room, looking over at everything vaguely unusual.
There was a demon thief with his girlfriend (who was, much to Shawn’s surprise, an angel)…. The couples singing karaoke off-key (anthro couples, one might add)…. The talking animals…
Everything was so unusual about this café that it may as well be the most normal place in town.
Finally taking a seat beside Kyr, Shawn grinned. “You guys! …. I had no idea that such a cool place existed!”
Daisuke laughed. “All you had to do was ask, you know. We’re glad that you enjoy it, though.”
The blond beside him was obviously also enthralled with Sutori, but he didn’t seem to want to show it. Instead, his eyes would flicker over in the directions of anything that he hadn’t seen before.
Like Shawn, Kyr’s eyes revealed that he had thought of people with animal tails and ears as something vaguely normal. They hadn’t said anything, but the other mages could tell. (If Shawn and Kyr hadn’t known about them before, they would have asked, right?)
Taking a menu, the redhead nodded. “You bet, yerf! How long has this place been around?”
Shikari shrugged. “Forever, it seems. The place is always updated to reflect the times and what-not.”
“I can imagine,” Minoru interjected, smiling at Shawn. “You said earlier that this is your first time here, right?”
Shawn nodded, returning the smile. “Yep. It’s really cool… did you guys hang out here with your friends a lot?”
“We did come here pretty often, but I don’t think we were ever here at the same time as Shikari-san or Minoru-san,” Hikari replied, calling the waiter to their table. “But I can guess that they did, since everyone comes here at one point or another…”
As the waiter took their orders (Minoru and Shikari had raspberry lemonades, Daisuke went for a glass of Coke, Hikari had some Diet Mountain Dew, and Shawn had a strawberry smoothie), Shikari couldn’t help but notice how different their tastes were… well, for the most part anyways.
She and Minoru seemed to share the same taste in beverages, but the others also seemed to have varying tastes. That wouldn’t be a problem in the future, hopefully, but it did bring up an interesting question in her mind, since any difference in a taste of anything meant that they could be very different with just about anything else.
The others didn’t notice this difference, and kept on chattering as normal.
Shikari didn’t listen in; she especially didn’t want to listen when the waiter came back. As she stared into the waiter’s black hair, noticing the blue streaks in his bangs, she let a sigh escape her lips.
“Why are you working, Kagemori-san…?”
Well, her words brought Daisuke and Hikari to her monologue.
Daisuke grinned, shaking his head lightly at the waiter. “Kaijou! You didn’t tell me that you got a uniform….”
The waiter, Kaijou, just stuck his tongue out at the data mage. “Guess it’s my luck, huh?” He responded, grinning. “The owner’s own son has to work here…”
“I’d love to work here…” Shawn absentmindedly interrupted, taking his smoothie from Kaijou’s hands.
Those comments brought an even wider grin onto the waiter’s face. “Oh, seriously? We’re definitely in need of a bartender. When can you start working?”
Five pairs of eyes met Kaijou’s, and in that instant – he knew that it was pointless to try to recruit the American. He raised his free hand after he had served everyone, sighing.
“Fine, fine. I won’t get him to work……yet, okay?”
As he left, Minoru shook his head lightly. “Shawn…”
“You could’ve gotten yourself hired like that,” Daisuke commented, snapping his fingers. “Next time, don’t speak aloud like that, okay?”
The gijinka mage nodded, sweatdropping. “I….see….”
Ari took a sip of her beverage; the fire mage seemed to have known that this would have happened from the beginning. “It’s too early for me to say ‘thought so’, right?”
Her eyes met Hikari’s; the two realizing something extremely important in that instant by the way their eyes began to sparkle.
“Shikari-san, are you interested in shopping afterwards?” Hikari asked, smiling as pleasantly as she always had.
Words like that, whenever in the company of certain boys, always fell either on deaf ears or groaning. The latter was especially true when one knew Hikari well – the brunette would spend hours upon hours just shopping for one little thing.
Daisuke took a swig of his Coke, his expression obviously one of remembering painful memories. “Hikari-chan… by chance, May the rest of us go ahead and do something else afterwards?”
The fire mage couldn’t help but grin at the other redhead’s words. “He’s been shopping with you before, eh?”
Hikari nodded. “Unfortunately…”
“Well, I see nothing wrong with not joining us. But what are you guys going to do after we leave?” Shikari asked, taking another gulp of her lemonade. “I mean, it’s not like there’s much else to do on a Saturday afternoon, right?”
Minoru shrugged. “We can always just hang out or something. I mean, anything other than shopping seems to be good for us.”
Shawn nodded in agreement. “Please, Shikari? It’s not like we’re planning to rob a bank or anything…”
She nodded, setting her glass down. “I don’t mind, but boredom’s going to get to you…”
“You act like it’s a disease,” Minoru commented, wrinkling his nose. “Surely it can’t be that bad…”
Kyr sweatdropped. “Maybe Shikari-san doesn’t like boredom?” He offered, breaking his silence. “If she does, then it’s out of our hands, ne?”
The other blond shook his head. “Of course not. We’ll get her to like doing nothing sooner or later…”
Ari took this as her cue to leave. Taking Hikari by the hand, the two left their booth, standing in front of the other four.
“Hey, guys – we’ll be going now. I guess we’ll meet at dinnertime at Dai’s place, since our families are going to meet for dinner there anyways?” She offered, looking over at the others.
Maybe that hadn’t been the right thing to say. Upon the mention of families, Shawn and Kyr’s faces darkened. (Ari was sure that they had both had families, so why were they sad to hear her say it?)
Shawn nodded suddenly, his darkened face quickly changing to a grin. “Of course! See you later, Shikari!”
She stared at Shawn, not sure about his sudden change. “….See you all later.” She finally said, walking out with Hikari.
As the two left, the four boys exchanged glances. All of them knew what the other was just dying to say, but none wanted to voice it.
“…..What now?”
Daisuke set his glass down as he heard Minoru’s words, slumping back into the booth. “I don’t really know…. Guess we can head to the park or something.”
“How about a game of soccer?” Shawn suggested, looking over at the others. “I know that we all know how to play, and I bet it’d be fun!”
Soccer? Somehow, those words didn’t quite register with Daisuke. Sure, it would pass the time and kill boredom, but was it something that he really wanted to play? (The answer was ‘not really’) Instead, he shook his head, a grin coming onto his face.
“Nah.. I know what we can play instead…..”
--------------------
“Maaaaan! I can’t believe that you made us go fish in the lake…”
Minoru shivered, taking a towel from Daisuke’s hands. As the blond wrapped the towel around him, the data mage couldn’t help but feel sorry for the situation that he had placed the other in.
“Hey, Mizuhara-san? You can go ahead and take a bath in my room. I’ll call your folks and ask them to bring a change of clothes.” Dai offered, taking the blond by the hand. As the two began to walk upstairs, they had yet to notice the awkward silence between Shawn and Kyr.
The gijinka mage sat down on the sofa, motioning for the holy mage to take a seat beside him. “…Your family might not show up tonight, huh?” He asked, his aquamarine eyes looking downcast.
Kyr slowly nodded. “…I’m not too sure if they will. I mean, I’m not exactly from around here.”
“…I’m from America,” Shawn replied. “So my parents may not make it tonight.”
Kyr tilted his head to the side. “…Ne? I thought your parents were mages too, like everyone else.”
Shuugo shook his head lightly, letting his bangs fall in front of his face. “Nope. My dad’s family is the side with magic, but he was born without it.”
Kyr slumped back into the sofa. “….I see. That’s kind of hard to manage, isn’t it?”
Shuugo glanced over at Kyr, letting a sigh escape his lips. “In a way, I guess. I would have really liked him to come – everyone always comments on how Dad knows everyone like he knows the back of his hand…”
“Your father’s a social butterfly, huh?” Kyr asked, laughing. “My tousan…he’s the kind of person who’d prefer being in close-knit groups than with tons of other people, ne. It’s kind of nice that way, but it is hard to meet new people outside of school and whatnot…”
The redhead gently wrapped his arms around a throw pillow. “Really, yerf? I bet my dad’ll make yours be more social…” He said cheerfully.
Kyr grinned. “Nuh-uh. I don’t really think that your tousan can make mine break from his shell…”
It would have erupted into a pillow fight at that moment if the door hadn’t opened then.
As Hikari and Shikari set down their piles of new-found shopping discoveries down beside the couch, Shawn could easily catch bits and pieces of their conversation.
“Did you see that cute guy at Bellagi? Hikari-san, I think he was almost flirting with you!”
He could see Hikari blinking at the fire mage’s unusual behavior, then joining in with the laughter that had escaped Ari’s mouth.
Kyr leaned closer to the redhead boy, shaking his head. “Girls are very odd creatures, Shawn-san. Just don’t listen to their conversation some days, ne?”
Shawn could say nothing else; he simply nodded in reply, throwing the pillow back onto the couch. Rising from the couch, the redhead walked over to the girls, pointing to the bags as if to ask if he needed to carry them anywhere.
The blond smiled faintly. There wasn’t much that needed to be said now. He had to ask himself if he really had been having... fun… with the American. As Kyr’s own blue-grey locked with Shawn’s aquamarine, the two exchanged smiles.
“Hey, everyone! All of our parents’ll be here in a few minutes, so let’s get ready, okay?” As Daisuke dashed down the stairs, Minoru slowly trailing behind him, the data mage’s eyes studied the room. It seemed to be in proper order now, even with the mound of shopping packages…
Shawn stared at Daisuke, raising an eyebrow. “…Even mine?” He asked slowly, making sure that each syllable sounded correct.
The data mage nodded, blinking. “Yeah, Takaishi’s folks are coming too. They just called to say that they would make it after all.”
Daisuke had never, ever seen both Kyr and Shawn smile in the manner that they did. To be honest, it was also a little… eerie. Even though they were completely different people in terms of appearance and personality, the two teenagers looked almost identical in that split second.
….It was too bad that the gingerbread cookies had to come in at that moment, and it was a shame that Ari broke the happy moment with her rush to grab the first one from Daisuke’s mother.
“…Hey, everyone,” Minoru broke the idle chatter with his voice, silencing them with a whistle. “Thanks for being here today. I think we’ll get along well, ku.”
Everyone nodded in agreement, letting the beyblader’s words sink in.
“Let’s get started on the party, then.” Daisuke replied, taking the boys by their hands. “After all, we’ll be together for who knows how long now….”
“It’s only a year, Dai,” Hikari interjected cheerfully as she led Ari to the kitchen. “And who knows? We could be close by the time this is all over, right?”
She doubted the reality of what she was saying; however, the group looked like they needed their spirits lifted somehow. Little did she realize that her words would ring true later on, eh?
